Music venues that lack integrity

One of the major problems facing the Secondlife music scene is the complete lack of professionalism exhibited by some (very few) venue owners and/or managers. I’m not sure if they simply have so much free time that they’ve lost all concept of the value of time, or wether they have no respect for other people, but for whatever reason they act like they are doing the performer a great favour by allowing them to perform at their place. This attitude is certainly acceptable if the performer is being paid a ton of lindens, but in the case of a tips only venue I prefer to think of it in terms of performer and venue graciously co-operating to provide entertainment for people to enjoy. In other words if you’re not paying the performer, the very least you can do is try to be as accommodating as possible. This is what made tips venues of the not-so distant past like Hummingbird Cafe the most amazing venues to perform in and to visit as a live music enthusiast. Nobody got paid, but you got respect and were treated like a friend, and there was always a crowd because EVERYONE was treated like a friend.
Tonight I had the misfortune of arriving at my Java Joe MacIntyre gig in SL, 25 minutes early to find that because SOMEBODY ELSE cancelled TWO performers before me, they had shuffled things around and were now telling me, that I could go on an hour later if I wanted. I have been performing, owning and managing clubs in SL since 2006, and I can tell you that any manager worth a pinch of manure would KEEP THE SCHEDULED ARTISTS and try to get a fill in for the cancellation. This is important because many performers have these things called
REAL LIVES and won’t log into SL until half and hour or 20 minutes before showtime. There is also the matter of any promotion that was done for that event. People will have scheduled their lives in order to attend that event at the scheduled time. Altering the schedule 20 minutes before showtime is not fair to the artist and more importantly not fair to the fans who will now have to waste time finding something else to do.
Then the plot thickened. It turns out that the performer who bumped me to a later time slot is managed BY THE SAME PERSON who manages the club! Ok venue ownership rule #1 “Never hire someone to manage your club if they represent performers”. This seldom works unless said person has a high degree of integrity which apparently was not the case with the venue tonight. In fact I believe that the main reason that this was done tonight was to hijack JavaJoe’s crowd for the benefit of another performer. These types of dirty tricks undermine what should be a strong relationship between venues and performers and have always been a thorn in the side of everyone who enjoys live music in Secondlife.
One of the main reasons that this pisses me off so much is that there are still some awesome people out there who run great venues. They work so hard to make their club a fun place to be for all concerned. They invest their time and money and most ask very little in return.

And then there’s these assholes who love to jerk people around and ruin things for everyone!

The other thing that gets my goat a little is that I left a house party with friends I haven’t seen in over 2 years, paid for a cab to get home in time rather than walking, which is what I normally do, only to arrive at the venue in Secondlife to find I could have stayed with my friends! If that’s my reward for showing up
like I said I would, ready to put on a show like I said I would, methinks I shall find somewhere else to perform. Somewhere where the staff is nice and I get some respect. If that’s the sort of venue you run, and you’re looking for someone who is serious about, (and has a love/passion for) entertaining your crowd, I’d love to hear from you. Provided you like the Blues! Here are some facts about Autism:

Tomorrow, 60 individuals will be diagnosed with Autism!  Their families will have no clear path to treat the symptoms.  Research initiatives to look into early diagnosis and early intervention are essential.  ASA launched the Treatment-Guided Research Initiative in order to bring early and effective treatment to all people affected by Autism.

100% of your gift to Blues For Autism will go directly to supporting the Autism Society.

Early identification and treatment of Autism dramatically improves the outcome for children diagnosed with this developmental disorder!

ASA is a leading source of information about Autism providing valuable resources in order to improve the lives of all affected by Autism!

Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others.

There is no known single cause for autism, but increased awareness and funding can help families today!

Please help by contributing to our campaign, Blues For Autism!

Autism is growing at an alarming rate, 10-17% per year!  Although you may not know someone affected by Autism today, the likelihood is that you will in the future!

Today, there are an estimated 1.5 million Americans affected by Autism.  Within the next decade, this number could reach 4 million!

The CDC estimates that Autism affects approximately 1 child out of every 110 births!

The overall incidence of Autism is consistent around the globe.  However it is 4 times more prevalent in boys than in girls!

Although Autism is not curable, it is treatable, with early diagnosis and intervention, people affected by Autism can lead healthy, productive adult lives!

I hope you can make it to the show, The Music Fan Contest rotating box will be there so you can get points for the April contest!
